How to Take Care of Opal Jewelry

The beautiful changing colors of Fall leaves to yellow, orange, and red perfectly exemplify the birthstone of October – the Opal.

Opal stones capture a fantastic and brilliant combination of colors that is rare to come across in other stones. Opal stones being used in jewelry has become quite popular over the years. Unfortunately, many people are unaware of how to take care of opal jewelry properly. In the spirit of the changing season and our love for opals as well, we want you to be able to care for your opal jewelry so it may keep its brilliant firey colors for years to come.

Here are our tips on how to take care of opal jewelry:

Do not use Cleaners or Chemicals

Everyday house cleaners and ultrasonic cleaners are not the way to go in cleaning your opal jewelry. Ultrasonic cleaners specifically from the vibrations can cause cracking or too much water penetration to the opal permanently damaging it.

Only Clean with Soap and Warm Water

Opals are fairly fragile and can only be cleaned with warm water and soap. We suggest getting a bowl with warm water and soap and a washcloth. Soak the washcloth in the warm soapy water and gentle go over the opal jewelry three or four times. Make sure you gently rub the washcloth over the entirety of the stone and take note of any scratches or blemishes that you may find. Once you are finished leave the opal jewelry to air dry.

Avoid Particularly Dry Areas and Drastic Temperature Changes

If you live in the New York/New Jersey area you are well aware of the fact that we can have very hot summers and very cold winters. Drastic changes in temperature can cause cracks and damage to opals. Opals that become too dry have a tendency to crack as well, this is known as “crazing”. We suggest keeping the opal jewelry in as moderate conditions as possible. Do not store the jewelry in a safe or vault as dehumidifiers can dry out opals and cause them to crack.
